Julie Pitman

Artist Biography
Julie Pitman grew up in Africa, constantly watching her father paint and local ebony carvers work. These first experiences in art lead her to be constantly changing and expanding her artistic interests. Julie followed up her studies in Italy and that was where she decided, "Leonardo da Vinci was one of my heroes and I felt it was important to learn technical art as well as fine art." So she took on the task to learn both but kept expanding, after spending time on technical art she went to collage. Then coming back to her interests, early experiences as a child she went to painting and stone sculpture. "I had seen Rome as a child and the stone sculptures really influenced my life. From age eight on, I sculpted faces in my sand pile almost every day. I feel that permanence is very important in art." Which landed her in sculpting, painting, and jewelry making. As Julie will tell you permanence in her artwork is her true passion and what she seeks with her work. Not only does she sculpt from stone but build from recycled materials to give them a new life.
